The Zeld@ Racerback Tank
This badass shares a name with a famous video game, meaning we have to use a special character to get it past the copywrite filter.
About the design
Zeld@ Sayre Fitzgerald (1900 - 1948) is most famous for being the wife of novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald and a legendary Jazz Age party girl. She was also a prolific writer, painter, and dancer. She makes Rosie's list of badass women not because of what she did, but for what she should have been able to do. Zeld@'s writing was good enough to be plagiarized by Scott for his work but, beyond the stories she published in newspapers and magazines, she struggled to gain traction on her own. She became an accomplished ballerina, but at 28 her mind and body couldn't handle the demand. She painted, but the press was too focused on her mental health struggles to notice her talent. Meanwhile, Scott chronicled (and profited from) his wife's mental deterioration in the novel Tender is the Night.
Zeld@ tragically lost her life in a fire while receiving her last treatment before being discharged from her commitment at the Highland Hospital in Asheville, NC. She is our Matron Saint of the Committed, reflecting her years of confinement in mental institutions, but also for her lifelong commitment to creative pursuits.
In 1970, Nancy Milford's biography made Zeld@ a feminist icon. In 1992, she was inducted into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame. In re-examining her work, an early genius can be seen - one that would have flourished with the freedom to explore her talents.
